Employees Handbook

Whether you work in a Samuel strapping head factory or in an office, your employer is legally required to give you an overview of what they expect from you in terms of behavior and responsibilities and what you can expect from them in terms of compensation and recognition. Many companies hand you an employee handbook when you are first accepted onto the payroll, but the city of Glendale, California has gone one step further and digitized the whole thing for inclusion on its website. If you're a city of Glendale employee, here are some of the things you can find in the digital handbook.

Background

It's nice to get a little bit of background on the place you're going to be working for so you can understand why they have peculiar attitudes toward strainers and how their motto and principles affect their working environment. The City of Glendale employee handbook contains sections on the history of the city of Glendale as well as an organizational chart of the city hierarchy so you can tell who is your boss and who you'll be needing to cooperate with.

Compensation and Benefits

This is the part that most new employees really want to know about: how much money will they be earning, and what are the perks that they get? Will they have a better shot at taking out loans from private lenders for mortgages? Is there a discount? In Glendale, all city employees get 5.5% raises every year as well as access to coveted and important services like medical insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, vision care, and retirement savings plans. Employees also have guaranteed access to parking.

Safety and Responsibilities

Since many of the jobs overseen by the city, including public works, firefighting, and police work, require employees to be exposed to danger, such as working with tube cutting machines or dealing with criminals, the city has laid out a comprehensive work safety program that includes training, meetings, and disability benefits. Employees are also expected to follow the rules laid out in the handbook regarding use of city property to protect themselves.

Leave

Vacation time and pay are also of great interest to new employees, as they all want time off to go see lead shot manufacturers or re-enact Civil War battles or whatever they do in their spare time. In Glendale, full time employees get 106 hours of vacation per year, much of which is used on city holidays. However things are different for emergency workers.
